Artisan
MORI KOUGEI ’森工芸’, established in 1953 in Tokushima prefecture by the current owner’s grandfather, has been specialising in the application of TSUKI-ITA for seven decades, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2023. Initially, the business operated as a “hari-ya,” with the founder focusing on attaching TSUKI-ITA to pre-assembled dressers and Buddhist altars using animal glue and a small iron. In the 1970s, with the advent of mechanisation and mass production in Japanese industries, MORI KOUGEI shifted its main products to decorative plywood. This plywood is primarily used for the surfaces of wooden products and interiors, including furniture such as desks, tables, cupboards, and storage units. The company also incorporates the traditional indigo dyed process, a craft native to Tokushima prefecture, into their products to create unique and distinctive items.
