Our Story

Simply Native is a cultural trading company that shares the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship with the world through thoughtful everyday objects made by artisans across Japan.

From the northern reaches of Iwate to Amami Oshima, the founder’s island hometown in the south, we work directly with craftspeople—sometimes sourcing their work, sometimes creating something new together from the ground up.

Simply Native began in 2016, born from the founder’s desire to share the quiet beauty of Japanese lifestyle crafts with care and honesty. Raised in a family of Oshima Tsumugi artisans, she grew up surrounded by the values of making.

Our curation is guided by one question: does this piece embody true craftsmanship?

We look for a deep sense of vocation, a worldview that sees humans as part of nature, and a quiet dialogue with others across time—these three qualities shape everything we choose.

We also consider how each item fits into modern life. Many of our pieces are made to be both beautiful and practical—for example, tableware that’s dishwasher-safe—so they can be used and enjoyed every day, without hesitation. Our hope is that these objects will quietly brighten people’s daily routines.

In 2023, we opened our long-dreamed-of flagship store in the heart of Sydney. It’s a small space, but one filled with intention. From here, we hope to continue sharing the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, for many years to come.

If you ever find yourself in Sydney, we warmly invite you to visit.
