Urushi Lacquer Art Panel
Urushi Lacquer Art Panel
Urushi is said to come from two Japanese words - “uruwashi” meaning beautiful and “uruosu” meaning “to moisten”. Urushi-nuri is a Japanese natural lacquer technique that has been refined over 7,000+ years. Harvesting and preparing the raw materials (sap) is a highly technical process that has been passed down for generations. Once the lacquer is ready, it’s applied to wood in very thin successive layers. This results in a light, watertight and stunning item for daily use/special occasions. No discussion of Japanese craft would be complete without urushi.
These bespoke art panels are created by Isuke-Shoten, a long-established urushi business in Kyoto. Currently in its seventh generation, they supply urushi materials to the best lacquer artists in Japan. In collaboration with these talented craftspeople, Isuke-Shoten offers this modern art using ancient lacquer techniques.
All pieces are handcrafted (taking around 3 months’ work to produce) and are one-of-a-kind. They are signed and dated by the artist. Choose from our current range of lacquer techniques/colours, or work with us on a commission piece.
