Hand-dyed and hand-sewn in Kyoto by Sourindou, these coasters are created using reclaimed textiles and natural tea dyes. Drawing on traditional Japanese tailoring techniques, each piece is individually dyed and sewn by hand, resulting in subtle variations in colour, pattern, and texture.

Some pieces are dyed using hojicha sourced from Ryuouen, while others utilise different tea materials including kobancha powder and unprocessed tea. The resulting palette reflects the quiet complexity of tea as a natural dye, ranging from warm golden tones to soft greys.

Available in three variations:

Grey - dyed using unprocessed tea materials to create soft grey tones.

Karibancha - dyed using Karibancha Powder, producing warm yellow and golden hues.

Hojicha - dyed using hojicha tea from Ryuouen, creating rich earthy brown tones and subtle variations.

Sizes

Small - 9.5 × 9.5 cm
Medium - 12.5 × 12.5 cm

As each coaster is individually hand-dyed and hand-sewn, slight variations in colour, pattern, and dimensions are a natural characteristic of the work and make every piece unique.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Sourindou | 蒼鈴堂 | Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture

Sourindou is a Kyoto-based practice exploring garment-making and object design through the lens of traditional Japanese kimono tailoring and material reinterpretation. Founded by Aki Yamada, a maker formally qualified in kimono tailoring, the studio transforms reclaimed kimono, fabric offcuts, and overlooked everyday materials into garments and small objects with renewed purpose.

Grounded in classical kimono construction techniques, Sourindou works without reliance on fixed patterns, instead responding closely to the qualities of each material - its structure, weight, and subtle irregularities. Every piece is sewn entirely by hand, embracing variation and quiet imperfection as an essential part of the process.

Since 2024, the practice has expanded into tea-based dyeing, using Kyoto-sourced teas including hōjicha tea leaves and unprocessed tea materials. Through layered dyeing methods and natural mordants, the studio explores soft, shifting tones shaped by time, chance, and repetition.

Sourindou is committed to re-evaluating the value of everyday materials, transforming what is often discarded or overlooked into quiet, functional forms that remain closely connected to daily life.
