The Kuro Raku matcha bowl holds a special place in the history of Japanese tea culture. While matcha was originally introduced from China in the 12th century—along with its tea utensils—It was in Japan that the first truly Japanese matcha bowl was created.
Sen no Rikyu, the revered tea master and a defining figure in the world of matcha, was the first to design matcha bowls specifically for the Japanese tea ceremony. The Kuroraku matcha bowl was the very first of its kind.
Crafted using a traditional low-temperature firing technique, Kuro Raku bowls are characterised by their deep black glaze and delicate yet warm texture. In the Japanese tea ceremony, the striking contrast between vivid green matcha and the rich black glaze of Kuro Raku is considered one of the most beautiful and refined expressions of wabi-sabi aesthetics.
Experience the timeless elegance of Japan’s first matcha bowl, made in the spirit of Rikyu’s tea philosophy.
