ABOUT THE MAKER
Shibaoka Tosendo Kiln | 柴岡陶泉堂 | Bizen, Okayama Prefecture
Shibaoka Tosendo Kiln was founded in 1912 by its first-generation master, Kozan (Yonejiro Shibaoka), who established the workshop under the name Kōzan to create Bizen ware. Rooted in one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, the kiln has continued for more than a century while carrying forward the spirit and techniques of Bizen craftsmanship.
Known for its unglazed surfaces and natural expressions created through wood firing, Bizen ware reveals subtle variations that emerge through fire, clay, and time — making each piece uniquely individual. Across generations, Shibaoka Tosendo Kiln has continued to preserve these traditions while creating works that remain connected to contemporary life.
