Silk Earth Art Panel

Silk Earth Art Panel
Nishijin-ori is a textile produced in Nishijin, Kyoto. What makes this weaving technique distinct is its highly decorative and finely woven designs. These premium fabrics are used for traditional clothing such as kimono and obi (the sash worn with traditional clothing). Nishijin weaving is an award winning craft that has been recognised in Japan and abroad. This technique has been employed for portrait weaving for celebrities, the presidents of the United States and Russia, the Crown Prince of Monaco and others.

Tomiya was established at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912) by Ihei Tomiya. Originally a textile merchant in Kyoto, Tomiya started making cloth for obi. Tomiya seeks to innovate with textiles, while preserving traditional skills.

These Nishijin silk earth art panels are handcrafted by the 8th generation of the founding family of Tomiya in Kyoto, Japan. Each carries the artist’s mark and date on the back.
