A garden broom made from fern, revived by hand.

"シダ箒": fern broom.
Once a familiar sight in Japanese gardens, then almost lost.

The head is made from fern, gathered into seven bundles and fixed to a long bamboo handle.
At 123cm tall, it lets you sweep standing upright, with long, easy strokes across the garden path or the front step.

The fern broom had all but disappeared, until it was carefully studied and remade using the knowledge of the old methods. Each one is made by hand, so every broom is slightly different.

A simple tool for a daily ritual: sweeping the entrance in the morning, the way it has long been done in Japan.

How to Use
For outdoor sweeping: gardens, concrete and tiled areas.

Care
Keep away from direct sunlight and air-conditioning, as the bamboo handle may crack if it becomes very dry. A crack won’t affect how it sweeps.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Fukami Sangyo | 深海産業 | Wakayama Prefecture

In Kainan, Wakayama, Fukami Sangyo has worked with natural fibres since around 1950, when Yoji Fukami began making hemp-palm rope at home.

That rope is still made the same way today, quietly supporting Japanese gardens across the country.

In 2019, they launched Broom Craft to keep the history of shuro and fern brooms alive. Each broom is made by hand in their own workshop, with new designs shaped by customers’ requests and the everyday ideas of their women craftspeople.

As broom makers in Japan grow fewer, their artisan training project welcomes anyone, regardless of age or experience, to carry the craft forward.
