The outer surface is covered with layers of lacquer and polished to create a pattern of the underlying lacquer colour. In contrast, the inside is finished in a simple 'Suri-urushi' technique, which allows the beauty of the grain of the wood to be felt, making this an excellent product where the qualities of the wood and lacquer can be felt together.
