Simply Native Japan is excited to bring the experience of
traditional indigo dyeing in Australia.
Don’t miss this chance!
Indigo dyeing
Indigo blue is one of Japan’s most loved and significant colours.
The deep indigo blue, known as “Ai”, is the most common and popular choice of colour since ancient times, and will be the colour of the official logo for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Ai is said to carry many useful properties: it acts as an insect repellent, shields against sunburn, and is allergy-free.
The beauty of indigo dyeing or “Ai-zome” is that with varying mixture and time, the colour can be separated into 48 different shades!
Using the same dye on cloth can produce a contrasting result of deep and rich blue through to a bright shade.
