The brand’s founder Yusuke Kido studied design in Tokyo, before pursuing ceramics study in Arita at age 25. Afterwards, he returned to his hometown of Kagoshima and started the brand “one kiln”, emphasizing the value of local materials.
Kagoshima is unique, a city of 600,000 people coexist with an active volcano Sakurajima, which erupts up to 900 times a year.
With their living space right next to the “Hinokami”[the fire god], people live alongside volcanic ash.
Ash regularly falls into the workshop. Works manufactured in white would end up with black spots on them. As a result, Kido often mixed the volcanic ash with minerals to create his characteristic rich glaze. One Kiln’s unique texture was born from both the uniqueness of the land, and the wisdom of the craftsmen.
The Cultivate series uses clay dug up in Bounotsu, where family of Yusuke Kido was from. It is then mixed, stored, and then after some years is ready for production.
Engraved on the bottom of the pieces are the latitude and longitude of the location where the clay was mined.
A playful spirit that makes the most fun of the materials is reflected in the firing method, with oxidation firing (OF) and reduction firing (RF) used at different times. We want you to enjoy the different colors and shapes that “the magic of fire” brings forth from these materials.
